People ask us how often windows should be cleaned and expect an answer in months. The honest answer in East Tennessee is not a number, it is a calendar. Two short stretches of the year do most of the damage to your glass, and if you clean just after each of them you get a far better result than cleaning on a fixed schedule that ignores what is falling out of the sky.
Week one: after the oak pollen drops
Knox County pollen counts climb through March and usually peak somewhere between the middle and end of April. Oak is the problem species for glass. It is heavy, it is sticky, and it comes down in a yellow-green layer that bonds to a warm pane within a day or two. Clean your windows in early April and you are cleaning them again in May, because the worst of it has not fallen yet.
Our advice to customers is simple: wait until the cars on your street stop turning yellow overnight. That is usually the first week of May in most of Knoxville, a little later in Sequoyah Hills and the foothills side of Maryville where the tree cover is heavier. Book then and the glass has a clear run through summer.
Week two: after the last leaves come down
The autumn window is easier to spot because you can see it from the driveway. Once the oaks and maples are bare, the debris that has been landing on your roof, in your gutters and against your screens has finished falling. Clean then and your windows carry you through the short days of winter, when low sun angles make every streak and every spot obvious from inside.
In most of our service area that lands in the first two weeks of November. It is the single busiest fortnight of our year, which is also why we tell people to book it in September rather than calling us the week they want it.
What about the rest of the year?
- Summer: bug splatter and sprinkler spotting are the two issues. Sprinkler spotting matters more, because the minerals etch if you leave them.
- Winter: road salt and grit spray onto street-facing glass. A front-of-house refresh in February costs about half a full clean and makes a surprising difference.
- After building work: paint flecks, mortar splatter and adhesive from stickers need removing quickly, before they cure hard onto the glass.
- After a storm: mud splash on ground-floor panes is easy to leave, but silt is abrasive and gets ground in by the next wipe.
The two-visit rhythm
Most of our residential customers settle into two visits a year: one in early May, one in early November. That covers pollen and leaf fall, it splits the year evenly, and it keeps the glass from ever getting bad enough to need extra passes, which is what makes a first clean expensive.
Homes that need more than two are usually in one of three situations. They sit on a busy road and the front elevation loads up with traffic film. They have irrigation that hits the glass. Or they are under a heavy canopy that drips sap and drops debris most of the year. If you are in one of those, a third visit or a cheaper front-of-house refresh between the main cleans is money well spent.
Book the date, not the month
The practical tip is this: put the two dates in your calendar rather than waiting until you notice the glass looks bad. By the time you notice, the pollen has been sitting there for a month and it takes longer to remove. A window that is cleaned before it looks dirty is cheaper to clean and stays clear longer.
